Signs Your Child Is Ready for Preschool

Updated: Oct 14

It’s a question we hear all the time , and if you’re wondering it too, you’re definitely not alone!

Starting preschool is a big milestone, and it’s completely normal to feel unsure about whether your child is “ready.” The truth is, there’s no perfect checklist. Every child is different, and readiness can look a little different for each one. But there are a few signs that can help you feel more confident.

Here’s what to look for:

  • They’re starting to do things on their own.

We don’t expect toddlers to be fully independent, but being able to do small things like feeding themselves, washing their hands, or trying to follow simple directions is a great start. Preschool encourages independence but it also helps build it, too!

  • They can express basic needs.

Whether it’s with words, gestures, or even a look — if your child can let someone know they’re hungry, tired, or need help, that’s a big deal. It helps teachers respond and support them throughout the day.

  • They’re okay being apart from you (at least a little).

Separation anxiety is totally normal (and it doesn’t magically disappear at age 3), but if your child can stay with a grandparent, babysitter, or in a playgroup for a little while, that’s a good sign they can adjust to preschool.

  • They’re curious about other kids.

They don’t need to be social butterflies, but if your child shows interest in playing near or with others, that type of curiosity is a great sign.

  • They can focus for short bursts.

No, we don’t expect them to sit still for long! But if they can spend a few minutes looking at a book, building with blocks, or listening to a short story, they’re likely ready for the kinds of activities we do in preschool.

Bottom line?

Preschool isn’t about having everything figured out — it’s about learning how to learn, and we’re here to support that journey. Readiness is more about a feeling of comfort and curiosity than hitting every developmental milestone.

If you’re not sure whether your child is ready — or you just want to talk it through — we’d love to connect. Every child grows in their own time, and sometimes just having a conversation makes all the difference.
